CBD oil to help with insomnia?
I personally use CBD oil to help primarily with sleep but there have been some other positive benefits that I have seen. Specifically, I work nights and have in the past had a tremendously difficult time falling asleep and staying asleep.
HLT posted a blog article (reused with permission) regarding its effects on sleep. Remember I've posted scientific research articles in the What is CBD section.
Nearly everyone experiences difficulty sleeping at some point. You may find that your mind is abuzz with activity no matter how hard you try to sleep. There are any number of possible causes why insomnia occurs. For some, the problem is easy to correct, as when it’s caused by jet lag, diet, pain or stress. Insomnia that is caused by anxiety, however, can be much harder to correct.
The body’s endocannabinoid system is responsible for a wide range of fundamental bodily functions, including sleep. Cannabinoid oil extracted from the hemp plant is able to aid this system. CBD oil works with the endocannabinoid system and helps promote homeostasis or balance in the body. This may have the effect of stabilizing chemical and hormonal levels. Helping the body find its balance has the effect of improving its ability to relax, both mentally and physically. Sleep tends to come more easily then. Research indicates that CBD oil may help promote improved deep REM sleep for improved sleep quality.
While CBD may promote sleep by helping the mind and body relax, it can help in other, less obvious ways, as well.
Anxiety: Anxiety presents a difficult challenge for those who suffer from insomnia. Anxiety creates overactivity in the mind at a time when it should calm down. It can produce stress hormones in the body that only exacerbate the problem. Difficulty sleeping because of anxiety, then, is more than just a challenge to do with the mind. It’s a hormonal issue as well.
Through the supplementation of the ECS, CBD oil may help calm an anxious mind, and produce a state of physical or mental ease. When the mind is able to relax, the brain’s natural sleep hormones are able to produce deep, enduring sleep.
Pain: Pain and insomnia can feed one another. A painful condition can make sleep difficult; sleep deprivation can create inflammation and worsen pain. If you do experience pain, it is probably an important part of your inability to sleep. Rather than try to directly address insomnia, it’s a better idea to correct the pain that worsens insomnia.
CBD oil has the ability to give the ECS receptors that help with sleep and painful conditions the boost they need. Whatever the source of pain — arthritis, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, among many others — CBD may work with the body’s endocannabinoid system to lower inflammation and promote repair.
The reactivity threshold is different from one person to the next. A look at the coffee habits of people is a simple way to understand how those thresholds work. For one person, a single cup coffee may get them to feel active and energetic. Another person may need several cups to feel that way. The rule, whether it is caffeine or CBD oil, is that you need to find your own dosage level through trial and error.
Even in small doses, CBD oil has the ability to promote alertness during the day. Those who are alert during the day are in a better position to sleep at night. CBD oil may help improve sleep cycles. A dose shortly before bedtime is all it takes.
Insomnia can be an intractable problem with conventional drugs. With CBD oil, however, better sleep is a possibility.
